The Birthday That Changed Everything: Learning to Honor YourSelf

It was the last day of my 48th year.

I had been up since 4:30 a.m.

I taught a 5:30 yoga class, got my girls ready for school, practiced spelling words in the car, came home, cleaned, vacuumed, mopped—and somewhere in between all of that, I paused.

I danced.
I reflected.
I moved through my own yoga practice.

I honored the day.
I honored my loved ones.
And for once—I honored myself.

And in that moment, I realized something powerful:

I had done a lot.

Not just in those seven hours.
Not just in that year.

But in the past eight years…
my God, how much I had grown.

Growth Isn’t Always Pretty

Growth didn’t come easy.

There were moments I had to pick myself up and start over—again and again.

There were extreme emotions.
Situations that pushed me beyond what felt manageable.
Times when balance felt impossible.

But I kept going.

I listened.

To teachers.
To my family.
To my instincts.

I listened in the stillness…
and I listened in the chaos.

And slowly, piece by piece, I learned.

The Year My Eyes Opened

This past year brought a deeper level of awareness than ever before.

I began to understand something about myself that explained so much:

I am a highly sensitive person with significant autistic traits.

And instead of fear, it brought clarity.

It gave me compassion for my younger self—
and courage for the woman I am now.

For the first time, things made sense.

Learning Takes Time (More Than We Think)

We expect growth to happen quickly.

But the truth is:

Learning anything takes time.

Learning how to:

  • Be a present mom
  • Be a better partner
  • Be a more grounded teacher
  • Be a lifelong student

It all takes time.

And yes—I’ve made mistakes.

Things I wish I handled differently.
Moments I didn’t see clearly at the time.

But that’s not failure.

That’s growth.

You Don’t Have to Operate at a 10

We live in a world that glorifies “go, go, go.”

But here’s what I’ve learned:

You cannot live your life at a 9 or a 10 all the time.

You have to:

  • Learn to live at a 5
  • Give yourself permission to slow down to a 2

Because balance isn’t found in extremes.

It’s found in awareness.

The Practice of Self-Reflection

Self-reflection isn’t optional—it’s essential.

It’s how we:

  • Recognize our growth
  • Learn from our experiences
  • Make intentional changes

And most importantly—

It’s how we honor ourSelf.

(Yes… with a capital S.)

When You Reach Your Next Birthday…

Pause.

Reflect.

Honor:

  • Your growth
  • Your challenges
  • Your lessons

Be grateful for all of it.

Then ask yourself:

What do I want to create next?

Because your future doesn’t happen by accident.

It happens by intention.

The Truth About Time

A wise friend once said:

“The days are long, the weeks are short, and the years go by in a minute.”

And it’s true.

We don’t know how much time we have.

So do your best today.

That’s it.

Not perfect.
Not everything.

Just your best.
