A Personal Journey of Healing Autism Through Diet and Gut Health.
Autism Parenting Challenges: When Traditional Therapies Aren’t Enough
As any parent of an autistic child knows, the journey comes with challenges. Speech therapy, occupational therapy, behavioral therapy, and physical therapy can be life-changing forms of autism support for many families.
My family used speech and occupational therapy for our eldest daughter as well—you can read more about my autism parenting journey here.
But while these services were incredibly valuable, I always felt like there was a missing piece… one that wasn’t talked about enough:
Nutritional health.
The Overlooked Piece in Autism Support: Nutrition and Gut Health
In recent years, there’s been growing attention on things like acetaminophen and its potential link to increased ADHD risk in children. While this has only recently gained mainstream attention, it didn’t surprise me. I had come across similar research over a decade ago while searching for ways to support my daughter.
During that time, I also discovered that children on the autism spectrum often have a higher likelihood of deficiencies in key nutrients—such as vitamin D, calcium, and others.
That realization shifted everything for me.
I made it my mission to support my daughter’s brain and body in every way I could.
- Prioritizing whole, nutrient-dense foods
- Limiting processed foods
- Avoiding excess sugar and artificial ingredients
- Supplementing with high-quality vitamins (including vitamin D)

These changes mattered.
Many parents are now exploring nutrition as part of their autism support.
But like many parents know—especially autism parents—picky eating can make nutrition incredibly challenging. The autism diet and gut health connection often lead to deficiencies for this reason – as many autistics prefer a limited choice of foods.
Which is why early exposure to a variety of healthy foods is so important… even when it’s hard.
Discovering the Nemechek Protocol
One day, while scrolling Facebook, I came across a comment mentioning The Nemechek Protocol for Autism Recovery. Something about it caught my attention.
So I did what I always do—I researched.
I went deep.
Testimonials. Medical references. Scientific discussions.
And eventually, I read the book by Dr. Patrick Nemechek.
What I found stopped me in my tracks.
The idea that three simple, natural dietary additions—combined with reducing inflammatory foods—could support brain health and healing through the gut-brain connection made complete sense to me.
Because after all — you are what you eat! When you understand the gut-brain axis… it clicks.
What Is the Nemechek Protocol?
At its core, The Nemechek Protocol is a therapeutic approach to holistic autism support that focuses on restoring gut health and reducing inflammation in the body to support brain function.

It’s stated on his website that: Dr. Nemechek found that the key to treatment and reversal of many of the common diseases affecting people today, is reversing dysfunction of the Autonomic Nervous System in combination with the renewal of stem cell production and neurogenesis through the reduction of metabolic inflammation.
– Dr. Patrick Nemechek, D.O.
It is important to read Dr. Nemechek’s book The Nemechek Protocol for Autism and Developmental Disorders – A How-To Guide to Restoring Neurological Function for a full understanding of the science and research behind his practice.
The 3 natural ingredients are:
- Organic Inulin (a prebiotic fiber that feeds healthy gut bacteria)
- High-quality Omega-3 fish oil
- Certified Organic extra-virgin olive oil
Alongside:
- Reducing processed foods
- Prioritizing whole foods that fight inflammation
- Refraining from Omega-6 oils (like vegetable, safflower, and sunflower oils)
- Relying on balancing the gut microbiome naturally
- Refraining from adding probiotics in the gut
If you follow his method, dysfunction and inflammation should subside.
Omega Balance and Autism: Why Diet Matters More Than We Think
Our bodies need healthy fats. Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids are essential for heart and brain health. Together they work to manage our metabolic process and keep our inflammatory response in check.
Unfortunately, the modern Western diet is heavily out of balance.
With the rise in processed foods and industrialized seed oils being used in our food supply, over the past 100 years we’ve encountered a growing epidemic of inflammation, autoimmune diseases, allergies… and an unfortunate reliance on pharmaceuticals to “help” it all.
Nutrition plays such a critical role in your health. It’s time to take control!
The recommended ratio of Omega-6:Omega-3 is 1:1 or 2:1
What we’ve been consuming?
20:1 – on average
That imbalance can contribute to chronic inflammation in the body—and the brain.
A better approach?

Get your Omega-6s from whole food sources like:
- Walnuts
- Sunflower seeds
- Almonds
- Eggs
- Tofu
…and reduce reliance on processed oils.
Try to eat 2 servings of fatty fish per week:
- Salmon
- Herring
- Sardines
- Mackeral
…and add a high quality Omega-3 fish oil supplement to your daily diet.
The Simple Changes We Made (And Why They Matter)
Before I ever became a parent, I knew that there were certain things that I would do differently if I had children. As a child to a single working mother, convenience was prioritized more than the ingredients on the nutrition label. Cereals with cartoon characters, tv dinners, and canned soup were staples in the home.
I drank soda or juice—never water. I ate candy and junk food for snacks—rarely fruit. Never fresh vegetables.
I vowed that I would not let my future children grow up that way. Health matters.
What you eat—matters.
Start with little changes. Replace a “bad food” for a healthier option — and over time that will have a cumulative effect on your health!
Olive oil became the new cornerstone in my home. It has been revered for thousands of years for it’s health and medicinal benefits. That’s why it’s called “liquid gold.”
I use it for:
- Cooking
- Salads
- Smoothies
- Even skincare
It’s an amazing healer of diaper rashes, too!
It’s rich in antioxidants, supports heart health and reduces oxidative stress in the body.

Important tip:
Unfortunately, Olive oil is one of the most commonly faked foods in the world.
Look for an olive oil that also contains a reputable third-party seal like COOC – (California Olive Oil Council), PDO – (Protected Designation of Origin), or PGI – (Protected Geographical Indication).
Equally important:
- Dark glass bottles only
- Certified organic, extra virgin
- Harvest date on the label
The Changes I Saw in My Autistic Daughter
When we started The Nemechek Protocol, it was 2018. My daughter was 4 years old.
At the time, she had:
- Limited vocabulary
- Picky eating habits
- OCD behaviors and stimming
- Frequent meltdowns
- Limited affection
I was also navigating my own healing from postpartum depression and PTSD.
We both needed support.
Within weeks…
Things began to shift.
- Moods improved
- Behaviors softened
- Stimming and meltdowns decreased
- She became more open to new foods
- Her vocabulary exploded
- Her awareness of others increased
- Playtime became less solitary
- She became more affectionate
And then… something I will never forget:
She finally said the words I longed to hear for so many years —
“I love you.”
My heart leapt.
You Are Not Alone: A Real-Life Full Circle Moment
About a year into the protocol — while I was minding my own business with my youngest in a baby pool, my ears caught the words “Nemechek Protocol” in someone’s conversation.
A woman was recommending it to her friend.
I understood this mother’s pain. I couldn’t stay quiet.
I quickly shared our experience — the progress and transformation.
“I swear by it,” I told her.
And I still do.
Long-Term Autism Progress: From Struggles to Thriving
The progress didn’t stop.

- Teachers and therapists noticed improvements
- Her communication skills expanded
- She became more engaged and connected
Eventually…
She graduated from her IEP in third grade.
No more speech therapy needed.
Today:
- She thrives socially and academically
- Has a healthy, varied diet
- Consistently makes honor roll
- Has acquired skills in art, music, sports, math, and speed reading — that just astound us.
But most importantly…
She is happy, kind, and growing into herself beautifully.
A Message to Autism Parents Searching for Answers
If you’re in the thick of it right now… and you’re running on empty…
I see you.
I’ve been you.
The exhaustion. The uncertainty. The concern for their future. The desire to help your child in any way possible.
This journey taught me something powerful:
There is rarely just one piece to the puzzle.
Genetics, prenatal health, parental age, environmental factors — they can all be contributing factors to autism.
Focus less on the “how” and choose to focus on the now. Our children reflect what we model.
Patience matters.
Love matters.
Therapies matters.
And for us—
Nutrition mattered more than I ever imagined.
Important Considerations Before Trying the Nemechek Protocol
While our experience has been incredibly positive, it’s important to approach any protocol with care.
- Every child is different
- Dosage matters – even for natural supplements
- Monitor changes thoughtfully
- Introduce dietary changes gradually
- Recognize that progress requires patience
Emerging research continues to explore the role of:
- The gut-brain axis
- Microbiome health
- Nutritional deficiencies in neurodevelopmental conditions
Always consult with a qualified healthcare provider and do your research.

Final Thoughts: Healing, Growth, and Finding Your Inner Strength
I don’t know where we’d be if I hadn’t followed my instinct after reading that one Facebook comment.
But I do know this:
Family members, teachers, friends new and old—are all amazed at how far we’ve come in my family.
Yes it took patience, love, learning and most importantly—dedication. Building self-awareness as a parent will help you find confidence and direction when you’re searching for clarity.
But I know a huge component on my journey was The Nemechek Protocol.
This is our lived experience.
And I am forever grateful that Dr. Patrick Nemechek wrote his book and shared his knowledge.
